Togetherness

Things I Highlighted is a bulleted list of particular sentences in a book that stuck out to me. These cannot be viewed as general summaries of books, but rather parts of books that struck me in a way that demanded more of my attention. Typically I share one thing I highlighted from each chapter, so they will appear in the same order they appear in the book. This version of Things I Highlighted will cover Togetherness, an interactive book that guides individuals on a team to develop their skills, reach their potential, and ultimately come ‘together’.

Togetherness

Togetherness

Preface: "Me" vs. "We"

  • Teams win matches, but teams with togetherness win championships and make history.

Chapter 1: The Science of Togetherness

  • In some high-performance sports, such as cycling (e.g., the Tour de France) there is only one winner, but the majority of the field are individuals that train exclusively to race as support riders to a designated lead rider. All their efforts - pushing through physiological and psychological limits - are done for the benefit of someone else.

Chapter 2: Introducing the 3Rs - Reflect, Represent, Realise

  • You are unable to represent "our" values and lead by example if you have not understood the team in the first place.

    • Also, understanding the history and culture of the team provides opportunities for you to fully and authentically understand what we need to do as a team to develop.

Chapter 3: Reflect

  • In order to unlock the power of your team through togetherness, you must first be a connoisseur of your team. You must wholeheartedly and authentically seek to understand the team you wish to bring together. In short, you must be an expert of your team!

Chapter 4: Represent

  • On their website [FC Barcelona], under the tab title "Club" there is a page called "Identity". At one of the greatest soccer clubs in the world, they devote space on their website to share their identity, which is made up of five shared values [Respect, Effort, Ambition, Teamwork, Humility].

Chapter 5: Realise

  • Realising involves facilitating opportunities for the team to live out our shared values and behaviours, and to achieve our vision. Our ambitions become a reality as our collective identity and goals are embedded in what we do. We become our values, week-by-week, day-to-day, hour-to-hour, moment-to-moment.

Chapter 6: Together

  • Your journey continues now that you have unlocked the power of your team's togetherness. Enjoy it and see where that adventure takes you all.

    • Wherever it will be, it will be together.
