Matters of the Heart and Soul

Our wounded world has fallen short again;

Our fallenness and lack of innate goodness for all to see;

And in these trying times we say, we feel, and we act;

Oftentimes without a trace of empathy.

For lest we forget that there is yet a cure;

One remedy to not make our circumstances worsen;

And, fortunately, it is not a human trait or characteristic,

but a remedy that comes in the form of a person.

It is God who looks at the heart;

It is God who looks at the soul;

It is God who takes our broken pieces

and makes them complete; whole.

So if we are all image-bearers of Him;

We all carry the face of the Divine;

That would include, thankfully, myself

and those who's skin color is different than mine.

Let us, then, look through the eyes of God

And we will then understand there are no racial compromises.

For when we look through the eyes of God

We see equal people of different colors, shapes and sizes.

And if Derek Chauvin was the only person on the planet,

God still would have loved him enough to send Jesus to die in his place,

Which is good news for you and for me,

For it is only through faith we are saved, by grace.

Let's not listen to fix or listen to win;

Let's listen to learn and understand.

Then let's speak the unwavering Truth to people

when we are called upon the witness stand.

If we don’t act, then it’s likely not the last time we hear of something like

when I Can’t Breathe came from the mouth of George Floyd.

For when it comes to matters of the heart and soul,

It is not something we can push aside and avoid.
