Understand Your Role and Embrace It

Alan Stein Jr. has a lot of experience working closely with top leaders in sports and business. He is the former performance coach for NBA superstars Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and Kobe Bryant and is now helping athletes and businesses elevate their performance.

His best-selling book Raise Your Game provides a blueprint for how to improve in whatever it is you do. One of those ways to improve is properly understanding role clarity. In the book, I love what he says about how to identify role clarity:

"A leader must examine every person on the team, what their strengths and weaknesses are, and what motivates them. Remember: the right role isn't always what a player wants to be; it's what he needs to be for the puzzle to come together."

Every team, company, and organization would be better off if everyone understood their role and embraced it.

A razor blade is sharp, but it can't cut a tree.

An axe is sharp, but it can't cut hair.

Scissors are sharp, but it can't cut wood.

Know your role and do your part. Football alone has eighty-eight opportunities to start. That's a lot of roles and many ways to contribute!

A wise man once said, "If you judge a goldfish only by how well it can climb a tree, it will go its whole life thinking it is useless."

Understand your role and embrace it.
