Your Current Trajectory Matters More Than Your Current Results

James Clear

Humans are obsessed with focusing so narrowly on the goal that we forget about the process it takes to get there. Why is that? Why do we forget about the steps along the way that lead to success?

It doesn’t matter how successful or unsuccessful you are right now. What matters is whether your habits are putting you on the path toward success. You should be far more concerned with your current trajectory than with your current results.

If you’re a millionaire but you spend more than you earn each month, then you’re on a bad trajectory; if your spending habits don’t change, it’s not going to end well. Conversely, if you’re broke, but you save more than you spend every month, then you’re on the path toward financial freedom—even if you’re moving slower than you’d like.

What is your current trajectory? Is it pointing up or down?

James Clear said it best:

Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity. This is one reason why meaningful change does not require radical change. Small habits can make a meaningful difference by providing evidence of a new identity."

So whenever you do a habit (good or bad), you are casting a vote for the person you want to become.

Think about that.

Create good habits, or don’t complain about your future self not aligning with the thoughts and desires of your current self.

Win the moment. Win the day. Win the battle. Win the war.
