How to Find God in Your Workplace

JBN Counseling

For those of us that work outside of a vocational ministry environment, finding God in our workplace can sometimes be more challenging than we anticipate. And because it can be challenging, we need to be intentional with it.

Among hundreds of useful tips that surely could be noteworthy, here are three ways you can find God in your workplace:

Come up with a short prayer you can repeat throughout the day. We all know that repetition makes progress, and your prayer life is no exception. Having a small, simple prayer that you can remember can transform your perspective and attitude and allow you to communicate with God throughout the day.

Action step: Draw upon verses from scripture or childhood prayers. Something like "Lord, I want to honor You today" or "God, allow people to see You through my work today" are short prayers that can have meaningful impact.

Keep a visual reminder of God in your work area. Your environment matters more than you think, so being deliberate about how you structure yours is crucial. Crafting a visual reminder of God at your desk is an easy and effective way to find Him more easily.

Action step: What that looks like for you can vary. It could be something as simple as a timeless WWJD bracelet, a post-it note with scripture on it, or a picture of something that reminds you of God (nature, your family, a memorable trip, etc.).

Do the best work you can even if nobody is watching. God notices your efforts. As Christians, we live for an audience of One. And because of this, we often need to remind ourselves that our best effort is needed. When we pursue excellence in our work, we are giving glory and honor to God by utilizing the gifts and talents He has given us.

Action step: When given a menial task, do your best. When tasked with a grand opportunity, do your best. When performing the mundane tasks each day, do your best. God is glorified when you do your best.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 is a verse many of us are unsure how to appropriately interpret within the context of today's culture. Praying constantly? Without ceasing? How are we supposed to do that?

The great theologian Leonard Ravenhill once expounded upon this verse and explained that, "Praying without ceasing is not to live every waking moment in prayer. A much more reasonable approach is to think about God every sixty seconds of every day."

With this in mind, finding God in our workplace must be of critical importance. Coming up with a short prayer that can be repeated throughout the day, keeping a visual reminder of God in your work area, and doing your best even if nobody is watching are practical ways to live out this verse in daily living.
